Waste Recycling Programs

The District has established recycling programs for a number of materials, including mixed paper, toner cartridges, plastic and aluminum beverage containers. For information on how schools can participate in the District’s recycling program, refer to Memorandum MEM-997, District Recycling Programs (*.pdf).

LAUSD and the City of Los Angeles are partnered

to improve waste recycling efforts. Download and

print the following Recycling Flyer for your school.

Recycling Flyer with list of Recyclables.

The goal of the District’s Recycling Program is to reduce the amount of waste the District disposes in landfills by 70 percent during the period 1990 to 2020, increasing from the current 50 percent goal adopted in 1989, making our goal consistent with that established by the City of Los Angeles. See the current diversion rate the district is achieving here: Recycling (*.pdf).

Waste Reduction Success in 2006!

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are emitted at nearly every stage of a product’s lifecycle, including during waste management. How organizations choose to manage their waste has significant implications on global climate change. The WasteWise Program enhances the capacity of its partners to reduce GHG emissions through waste reduction activities, benefiting both the environment and the organization’s bottom line.

See LAUSD 2006 Climate Profile.

  • GHGs refers to greenhouse gases. MTCE refers to metric tons of carbon equivalent

  • The data included in this document is based on annualized reported data.

  • The Global Environment & Technology Foundation has determined the real-life equivalency factors (in partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development and EPA) used in this Climate Profile. Data are estimated based on the equivalents for 1 MTCE. Background information on the factors is available online through the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Equivalencies Calculator located at <www.usctcgateway.net/tool>.
